">In de Karabagh-oorlog is het hedendaagse recht tegenstrijdig, afhankelijk van de vraag of het wordt geïnterpreteerd in termen van eigendom van het grondgebied of de zelfbeschikking van het volk. Het Turkse volk (zowel Turkije als Azerbeidzjan) heeft van deze dubbelzinnigheid geprofiteerd en heeft dit gebied, dat zelf onafhankelijk is verklaard (kunstakh), aangevallen, hoewel het de facto verbonden is met Armenië. Rusland heeft al laten weten dat het volgens de verdragen Armenië zal verdedigen als het wordt aangevallen, maar dat zijn nationale veiligheid niet wordt geschaad door wat er in Karabagh gebeurt.
